ISLAMABAD, Nov 11 (APP):Parliamentary leaders from more than 40 countries gathered in Islamabad on Tuesday as the two-day Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) officially opened, a significant diplomatic effort to advance global peace, security and sustainable development.
The inaugural session began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, and representatives from various international organisations were present, highlighting Pakistan’s growing role in fostering parliamentary diplomacy.
This year’s conference carries the theme “Peace, Security and Development,” reflecting a shared global recognition that stability and socio-economic progress are inseparable.
In a video message from Geneva, Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary-General Martin Chungong welcomed the conference, noting that its theme aligns closely with the IPU’s mission of promoting human security, peace and justice worldwide. “Peace, security and development are interconnected, and our collective efforts must continue to ensure prosperity and justice for all,” he said.
Welcoming delegates, ISC Ambassador Misbha Khar described the presence of global parliamentary leaders as a symbol of commitment to dialogue over division.
“This conference embodies the spirit of unity and reflects the vision of the Senate Chairman, who has brought together over 45 parliamentary leaders,” she said, adding that stalled peace inevitably hinders development.
ISC Secretary-General E. K. Nath Dhakal also addressed the assembly, emphasising the organisation’s work on critical global issues, including climate challenges and international cooperation for peace.
He urged all stakeholders to advance the shared agenda of peace, security and development.
Senate Chairman Gilani welcomed participants on behalf of the Parliament and the people of Pakistan, praising the country’s commitment to fostering harmony and collaboration under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari. “Peace and security are interconnected, and without peace, sustainable development remains out of reach,” he said.
Prime Minister Sharif delivered the keynote address during the opening session.
The inaugral session concluded with the presentation of commemorative shields to ISC Secretary-General Dhakal and Ambassador Khar, followed by a group photograph of all delegates.
