Rs 54.9m fine imposed for sugar overpricing, 5 warehouses sealed

LAHORE, Nov 10 (APP):Secretary for Price Control and Commodities Management Dr. Kiran Khurshid on Monday chaired an important meeting on the provision of essential commodities at affordable prices, reiterating that ensuring the availability of daily-use items at fair rates remains the top priority of the department.
She said that action against profiteers is underway across all districts of Punjab without discrimination.
Sharing two-day performance figures, Dr. Kiran Khurshid informed that 926,437 inspections were conducted across the province, leading to strict action against 2,595 profiteers. Authorities imposed fines amounting to Rs5.52 million, registered 21 cases, and arrested 246 individuals involved in overpricing of essential items. She said that a focused crackdown is also in progress to ensure sugar is sold at officially notified rates. During this operation, the department took action against 62,272 sugar profiteers, registered 496 cases, and arrested 3,782 individuals for sugar overpricing. Fines totalling Rs54.978 million were imposed, and five shops and warehouses involved in hoarding were sealed.
Dr. Kiran Khurshid said that the Price Control Department is fully active against hoarding, profiteering, and artificial shortages. She said that strict legal action will continue to safeguard the supply of pure and affordable food items across the province.
