RAWALPINDI, Nov 06 (APP):The Rawalpindi Division has achieved 80 per cent of its wheat cultivation target, with 1.22 million acres sown out of the assigned 1.53 million acres, officials said on Thursday.
Additional Commissioner Revenue Rawalpindi Syed Masood Bukhari, chairing a meeting of the Divisional Wheat Committee, said the divisional and district administrations were coordinating with the Agriculture Department and other stakeholders to ensure timely sowing across the division.
He noted that the Punjab Government prioritised agricultural development and farmers’ economic well-being, promoting modern technology and providing interest-free agricultural loans worth billions of rupees.
Director Agriculture Shahid Iftikhar Bukhari briefed the committee, saying wheat would be procured at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms and that the federal and provincial governments planned to purchase 6.2 million metric tonnes for strategic reserves. Punjab’s cultivation target this season is 16.5 million acres.
He added that certified seed was available at Rs5,500 per bag, while fertilisers were abundant below notified rates. Wheat, he said, was vital for national food security, with Punjab contributing over 70 per cent of total production.
Under the Rs7 billion Agriculture Transformation Plan, Potohar was witnessing progress in strengthening agriculture and rural livelihoods. He expressed confidence that the Rawalpindi Division would surpass its target this year.
