HYDERABAD, Nov 06 (APP):The Sindh government has approved a pilot project in the Nara Canal Area Water Board to digitize the assessment and collection of water charges (abiana).
According to a statement issued by a spokesperson of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA), the Chief Minister of Sindh has given formal approval to launch the pilot project aimed at transforming the existing manual system of abiana assessment and recovery into a digital one.
Following the chief minister’s directives, a high-level SIDA delegation led by Chairman Qabool Muhammad Khatiyan met with the Chief Executive Officer of the Sindh Information Technology Company (SITC) Syed Zain-ul-Abideen Shah, in Karachi.
During the meeting, the Chairman Khatiyan said that the Sindh government seeks to bring transparency and efficiency to the water revenue system by eliminating weaknesses in the manual process through digital transformation.
He added that the initiative would not only restore farmers’ and consumers’ confidence in government institutions but also provide them with the convenience of paying water charges from their homes.
“Initially, the digital system will be implemented as a pilot project within the jurisdiction of the Nara Canal Area Water Board, and later expanded across Sindh,” he stated.
General Manager (Transition) Sadiq Khaskheli and Director Nara Canal Area Water Board Shan Mallah briefed the meeting on the current abiana system and the proposed digital model.
SIDA’s Manager Social Mobilization and Gender Masroor Shahwani and Assistant Manager IT Faisal Soomro were also present on the occasion.
