Punjab to introduce points system to curb traffic violations

LAHORE, Nov 06 (APP): The Punjab government has approved the introduction of a new traffic licence points system aimed at controlling traffic violations across the province.
The system is modeled on modern traffic monitoring mechanisms used in Dubai and other advanced cities.
According to official sources, two to four points will be deducted from a driver’s licence for each violation. If a driver loses 20 points within a year, their licence may be suspended for a period ranging from two months to one year, depending on the seriousness and frequency of offences.
Traffic department officials described the new points-based mechanism as a strict accountability measure designed to discourage habitual violators. For instance, offences such as over-speeding or signal-breaking will result in a deduction of four points, along with a separate monetary fine.
Officials said the initiative aims to encourage careful and responsible driving among citizens. Unlike the current system where penalties are purely financial, the new system introduces long-term consequences for repeated violations.
Experts believe this dual penalty framework — combining monetary fines with licence point deductions — will help reduce reckless driving and significantly improve road discipline throughout Punjab.
