DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Nov 06 (APP): A media orientation session on polio, measles and rubella awareness was organized under the District Emergency Operations Centre here at a local hotel here Thursday.
The session was attended by District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Syed Muhammad, Assistant Commissioner Darazinda, EPI Coordinator Dr. Irfan Aziz, WHO representative Dr. Nazir, COMNet officials Dr. Saleem and Dr. Junaid, along with other health officials and media representatives.
In his briefing, Dr. Nazir said that although no new polio case was reported in the past ten months, environmental samples still show traces of the virus, underscoring the need for continued vigilance.
“We must maintain our efforts with consistency and hope,” he said, adding that incomplete access to every child remains a key hurdle in eliminating polio completely.
Dr. Saleem emphasized the pivotal role of the media in identifying and highlighting areas of negligence or gaps in vaccination efforts. “Constructive reporting can help shape better strategies and improve implementation,” he said.
He further noted that promoting positive awareness about polio eradication is a shared responsibility, as the campaign is a national duty aimed at protecting future generations from a disabling disease.
DHO Dr. Syed Muhammad and EPI Coordinator Dr. Irfan Aziz also addressed the gathering, warning that measles can lead to serious complications and even death among children if preventive measures are ignored. They urged upon the parents to ensure timely immunization, explaining that completing the full vaccination course within two years protects children against 12 dangerous diseases and helps them lead healthier lives.
The officials announced that a 12-day special measles and rubella vaccination campaign will commence on November 17, during which children aged between six months to five years will receive measles and rubella vaccines, while those under five will also be administered polio drops.
They appealed to all parents to fully cooperate with health teams to ensure every child is vaccinated. The session concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to achieve a target of polio-free Pakistan.
