KARACHI, Nov 05 (APP):Pakistan and Romania have agreed to establish a Friendship Monument in Karachi to celebrate 61 years of diplomatic relations and deepen cooperation in culture, education and business.
The plan was finalized during a meeting between Romanian Ambassador Dr Dan Stoenescu and Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi.
At the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between Karachi and Romanian cities, focusing on local government partnerships, cultural exchange, and trade promotion, said a news release on Wednesday.
The Pakistan Romania Business Council (PRBC) will supervise the construction and upkeep of the Friendship Monument, which will stand as a symbol of the growing relationship between the two nations.
Ambassador Stoenescu appreciated Commissioner Hasan Naqvi and his team for their support in identifying a suitable site for the monument. He said the initiative reflects the shared commitment to fostering closer ties through people-to-people contact and cultural projects.
The ambassador also announced that Romania will soon reopen its Honorary Consulate in Karachi to serve Sindh province. The consulate will assist in facilitating bilateral trade, business connections, and community engagement.
Both sides agreed to explore cooperation in several local governance areas, including urban management, sustainable development, and public administration. They also discussed ways to expand educational partnerships by promoting student and faculty exchanges and joint academic programs.
The meeting further highlighted the potential for business collaboration between Karachi, Sindh, and major Romanian cities. Officials from both countries emphasized the importance of supporting private sector partnerships and encouraging investment to boost bilateral trade.
A proposal was also discussed to name a road in Karachi “Constanta Avenue” after the Romanian port city, while a road in Constanta would be named “Karachi Avenue” to reflect the close relationship between the two major ports.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties through local cooperation, cultural initiatives, and economic opportunities. The planned Friendship Monument is expected to become a landmark of mutual respect and partnership between Pakistan and Romania.
