LAHORE, Nov 03 (APP):The Price Control and Commodities Management Department has intensified its crackdown across Punjab to maintain the availability of essential food items at government-notified prices, a department spokesperson said on Monday.
He said that during the latest round of inspections, 335,421 raids were conducted across the province, resulting in action against 9,587 profiteers. Authorities imposed fines worth Rs718,500 and registered two FIRs against violators.
The spokesperson added that a continuous increase in tomato supply has brought a visible decline in prices. A total of 73 truckloads of tomatoes reached Lahore’s Badami Bagh market last night, while further consignments are arriving from Balochistan and Iran, which is expected to lower prices further in the coming days.
At present, tomatoes are selling at Rs140 per kg, onions at Rs145 per kg, and fresh potatoes at Rs95 per kg. Prices of pulses have also declined, with chickpeas at Rs255 per kg, black gram (daal maash) at Rs410 per kg, and mung lentils at Rs345 per kg in Lahore markets.
To ensure the sale of sugar at official rates, 10,831 inspections were carried out across Punjab. As a result, 290 violators were fined Rs123,500, and 11 individuals were arrested for overpricing, the department added.
