LAHORE, Nov 02 (APP): Convener of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Committee on Food, Shahid Imran, said on Sunday that four emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, advanced energy systems, and sensor networks, are poised to reshape global labour markets, offering vast opportunities to enhance productivity and transform jobs across agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and several other sectors.
Addressing a seminar titled “The Role of Emerging Technologies in Pakistan’s Economic Growth,” here on Sunday, he said that unlocking the full potential of these technologies, while effectively managing their associated risks, would require mobilization of investment capital, accelerated diffusion of global technology, and inclusive access to innovation.
Citing a recent report by the World Economic Forum, Shahid Imran said that seven major job sectors are expected to experience the greatest technological transformation. These include agriculture, manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail trade, transport and logistics, business and management, and healthcare, which collectively represent nearly 80 percent of the global workforce.
“Understanding which technologies will be most transformative and how they will impact these key sectors is crucial to anticipating their effects and steering toward positive outcomes,” he remarked.
He noted that while emerging technologies bring enormous opportunities, they also pose challenges that require tailored strategies. The report, he said, recommends sector-specific and context-driven approaches, emphasizing improved technology diffusion and access in agriculture and healthcare, localized industrial strategies for manufacturing, and well-functioning digital platforms for the transport and logistics sectors to enhance efficiency while preventing market monopolies.
He added that Pakistan must embrace these technological transitions proactively to ensure inclusive, sustainable economic growth and competitiveness in the evolving global landscape.
