An ITP official told APP on Thursday that the campaign launched on September 1, 2025 remains in full swing and has greatly strengthened compliance with traffic laws, enhancing public safety across Islamabad.
During the campaign, ITP officers checked over 2,000 drivers on the roads. The licensed-driver ratio, initially 56 percent, surged to 76 percent during the drive and has now reached 80 percent, marking a major shift toward ensuring that only qualified drivers are behind the wheel.
More than 140,000 new driving licences have been issued under the initiative a remarkable 500 percent surge, helping reduce road accidents and promote a culture of responsible driving.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Capt. (R) Hamzah Humayun said the drive aims to raise the licensed-driver percentage to 90 percent, in line with international safety standards. “We are committed to making Islamabad a model city of road safety,”
he emphasized.
The initiative was launched under the directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi to meet the growing need for licensed drivers and ensure safer roads through regulated mobility.
IGP Rizvi commended the ITP team for their performance, stating that proper licensing is a fundamental pillar of public safety and effective traffic management.
To support this initiative, ITP has modernized its licensing system with one-window processing, digital appointment services, and touch-screen theory tests, ensuring fair and efficient assessment of new applicants. Additional improvements are underway to further enhance public facilitation.
CTO reiterated that enforcement and public awareness under the campaign will continue uninterrupted throughout the federal capital to sustain the progress achieved so far.
Islamabad Traffic Police remains dedicated to promoting uniform compliance with traffic laws, discouraging VIP culture and unsafe driving practices.
With the continued cooperation of citizens, ITP is confident of achieving the 90 percent licensed-driver target soon, bringing Islamabad closer to world-class safety standards.
