LAHORE, Oct 30 (APP): Director General (DG) Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) Najmussaqib visited the Spice Market Revitalisation Project site from Dehli Gate to Akbari Gate to inspect ongoing work on the special directions of the Punjab government.
The project aims to widen pedestrian pathways, restore historic buildings, and boost commercial activity in this centuries-old trade corridor. It was approved on May 19, 2025, with a total cost of Rs. 1005.39 million, and is expected to be completed by June 2027. The PDWP endorsed the scheme on April 25, 2025, reflecting the Government of Punjab’s commitment to protecting key heritage assets.
The Director General explained that the initiative has been divided into four parts.
Package 1 (Rs. 231.2 million) includes façade restoration and electrical and PTCL upgrades from Dehli Gate to Gurmandi Chowk, covering 273 properties and around 115 shops.
Package 2 (Rs. 218.8 million) focuses on road, parking, and drainage enhancements between Gurmandi and Akbari Gate, benefiting 203 properties and around 260 shops. A 200-foot road and 1,200-foot parking area will be developed.
Package 3 (Rs. 339.1 million) improves Akbari Bazar, upgrading 329 properties and about 420 shops with better lighting, electrical, and PTCL services.
Package 4 (Rs. 100.5 million) involves reconstructing the missing Akbari Gate, which will stand 37 feet high and be illuminated.
The Director General noted that the Spice Market has served as a major trading route for spices and traditional goods for hundreds of years. Over time, structural decay, congestion, and unplanned utility works have impacted the area. Under the Government of Punjab’s guidance, this project will help revive the built heritage, improve infrastructure, ease movement, and support tourism.
He added that the Government of Punjab is committed to protecting Lahore’s heritage and culture and to restoring the city to its original glory. All relevant departments are fully engaged to ensure the project’s success and help revive Lahore as it once was centuries ago. This initiative by the Government of Punjab will boost tourism and further enhance the city’s historic fabric.
