SARGODHA, Oct 28 (APP):The first-ever meeting of the newly constituted Gender Mainstreaming Committee at the University of Sargodha was held under the convenorship of Dr. Rehana Ilyas. The committee, established by the Vice Chancellor, gathered with a collective vision to serve as the primary forum for promoting gender equity and inclusivity by integrating gender perspectives across all facets of the university’s operations.
Through this initiative, the Vice Chancellor envisions transforming the University of Sargodha into an inclusive, equitable, and progressive institution that empowers individuals of all genders. The focus will be on creating an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities to thrive.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Rehana Ilyas emphasized the importance of a mindset shift within institutions and society, stating that gender mainstreaming requires capacity building and continuous sensitization. This, she said, would help ensure women can perform at their highest potential. Dr. Ilyas also stressed that women’s participation should be driven by competence and opportunity, not quotas. She added that gender mainstreaming should address the concerns and inclusion of men, women, and transgender individuals alike.
Dr. Nargis Abbas highlighted the significance of human resource development for Pakistan’s overall progress. Referring to national employment data, she pointed out that 1.2 million women, primarily in lower-grade positions, remain underrepresented in decision-making roles. She underscored the need for their effective inclusion in leadership positions and decision-making processes.
In line with the Committee’s mandate to promote gender equity in academia, administration, and governance, Dr. Abbas suggested preparing a structured set of recommendations to guide institutional actions aimed at achieving these goals.
Dr. Asiya Saif Alvi echoed the importance of institutional growth, acknowledging the University of Sargodha’s significant progress towards inclusion over the years. She praised the formation of the Gender Mainstreaming Committee as a positive continuation of the university’s efforts.
The Committee also discussed strategies to ensure a safe and respectful campus environment, focusing on addressing workplace harassment and gender-based barriers. Members agreed to organize awareness campaigns, training workshops, and periodic reviews as part of the Committee’s ongoing action plan.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to translating the university’s gender mainstreaming vision into tangible, actionable steps, ensuring inclusivity, equality, and empowerment at every level of the University of Sargodha.
