ISLAMABAD, Oct 23 (APP):Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Thursday said the significant reduction in electricity rates for the industrial and agricultural sectors, is a land mark step toward strengthening country’s economy.
In a video message, he said that the country currently has 7,000 megawatts of surplus electricity, and the government has decided to channel this additional power toward industries and agriculture — the “backbone of the national economy.” The minister said that the price of additional electricity units for the agriculture sector has been reduced from Rs38 to Rs22.98 per unit, while for the industrial sector, the rate has been slashed from Rs 34 to Rs 22.98 per unit.

“This initiative will reduce the average cost of electricity for consumers,” he said, adding that lower tariffs for additional consumption will incentivize greater industrial and agricultural productivity.

Explaining the benefit, Leghari said that farmers using an additional 100 units would experience a reduction of Rs7 per unit in their average electricity cost, while industrial users consuming an additional 1,000 units would see a decrease of around Rs 5 per unit.
He added that the government had already taken measures to rationalize industrial tariffs, and the new reduction would further boost industrial growth and competitiveness.
“We are fulfilling the promises made to the people,” the minister said, expressing hope that the measure would contribute to overall economic stability and progress.
