FAISALABAD, Oct 20 (APP):Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar directed four districts of the division to take emergency measures to tackle the escalating threat of smog.
Chairing a meeting of the Divisional Smog Committee on Monday, the commissioner called for intensified preventive actions, including regular water sprinkling to suppress dust and reduce air pollution. He also ordered an immediate ban on fireworks throughout the division.
To curb urban pollution, he instructed that trucks carrying soil or sand be diverted to bypass routes outside city areas. Additionally, he strictly directed that no brick kiln without zigzag technology be allowed to operate, with round-the-clock inspections to ensure compliance.
Commissioner Anwar warned that industrial units operating without emission control systems or using prohibited fuels—such as leather and textile waste—will face strict and indiscriminate action. He noted that multiple warnings had already been issued to such units, urging compliance with environmental regulations.
He emphasized the importance of raising awareness among farmers to stop the burning of crop residues. Instead, farmers should be encouraged to recycle crop remains for the next cultivation cycle.
Further instructions included the removal of roadside dust, intensified vehicle inspections, and the imposition of fines on smoke-emitting vehicles. Rice mills must also be inspected to ensure proper installation of dust covers.
The Commissioner directed all deputy commissioners to personally monitor enforcement measures and ensure visible, on-ground action against smog-causing sources.
Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad Nadeem Nasir, along with deputy commissioners from Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, and Chiniot, attended the meeting via video link. Senior officials from the Environment Protection Department, Agriculture, Traffic Police, WASA, PHA, Communication & Works, Municipal Corporation, and Municipal Committees were also present.
