Dera Ismail Khan, Oct 19 (APP): Vice Chancellor Gomal University, Prof. Dr. Zafar Iqbal, has said that the growing climate crisis poses a more serious threat to humanity than terrorism and requires urgent, collective action from all segments of society.
He expressed these views while inaugurating the second phase of the Urban Forest Project at Gomal Medical College under the Climate Smart Medical College initiative. The campaign, launched by the Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with Sahara Save Earth – Shajar Dost, aims to promote tree plantation, water conservation, and sustainable environmental practices on campus.
The Vice Chancellor warned that continued negligence toward environmental issues could make survival increasingly difficult in the coming decades. He said that pollution, urban sprawl, and unplanned development have severely affected the ecological balance of Dera Ismail Khan, urging academic institutions to take the lead in addressing the challenge.
Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine, Prof. Dr. Nargis Nauman, highlighted the ongoing projects under the Climate Smart Medical College program, including rainwater harvesting, green energy promotion, solid waste management, and the establishment of nurseries for continuous plantation.
Coordinator of Sahara Save Earth Shajar Dost, Aamir Sohail Sadozai, said that the organization has planted thousands of trees in various educational and public spaces and is determined to make Gomal Medical College a model of climate-smart education in the province.
