LAHORE, Oct 17 (APP): Trauma has emerged as a major medical emergency in Pakistan, driven by rapid industrial development, population growth, and increasing traffic congestion.
The issue was highlighted during a special session held at Amir-ud-Din Medical College (AMC) in connection with World Trauma Day, focusing on the escalating challenges of severe injuries and accident-related emergencies.
Addressing medical students and young doctors, Principal AMC Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal cited global research indicating that traffic accidents are now causing more deaths than cancer and heart diseases among individuals up to the age of 44. He urged the youth to adopt safe driving habits, reminding them that “speed thrills but kills,” and emphasized that caution remains the foundation of a safe society.
He informed that Lahore General Hospital (LGH) receives the highest number of trauma cases caused by road accidents, industrial injuries, and other mishaps. Although LGH’s Trauma Unit operates round-the-clock, the growing influx of patients underscores the urgent need to integrate trauma prevention and management into medical education.
Prof. Farooq Afzal stressed that future doctors must be not only theoretically sound but also practically skilled in trauma management and emergency response. He noted that AMC students are being specially trained in Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care because “a moment’s delay can lead to the loss of a human life.”
He appealed to the public to follow safety rules regarding helmets, seat belts, and speed limits to prevent avoidable accidents. Speaking to the media, he further emphasized the importance of promoting First Aid and Basic Life Support training at educational and community levels, strengthening trauma units across hospitals, and ensuring inter-institutional collaboration to raise awareness and save precious lives.
