PESHAWAR, Oct 15 (APP):A Breast cancer awareness seminar Wednesday organized at Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar in collaboration with the HEC Pink Ribbon Awareness Program.
The purpose of the seminar was to raise awareness among women about the importance of early diagnosis, prevention, and timely treatment of this life-threatening disease.
The event was attended by KMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zia ul Haq, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences Prof Dr Rubina Nazli, Prof Dr Andaleeb Aftab (Associate Professor of Chemistry, Army Public School Peshawar), Dean of Nursing Sciences Prof Dr Dildar Muhammad, and Associate Prof Dr Najma Naz, along with a large number of faculty members, students, and participants from various walks of life.
The program was organized by Lecturer Imran Waheed, who also served as the focal person of the event. Dr Najma Naz presented a comparative analysis of previous and current research studies on breast cancer, highlighting the rising incidence of the disease and the modern scientific approaches being adopted for its treatment.
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zia ul Haq said that the increasing number of breast cancer cases has become a serious challenge for society and to combat it, public awareness, early detection, research, and policy-level initiatives are essential.
He emphasized that women should be aware, cautious, and personally responsible for their health. He further added that Khyber Medical University is actively contributing to breast cancer awareness through its medical students, nursing staff, and public awareness campaigns across the province.
Prof Dr Rubina Nazli stated that one in every eight women worldwide suffers from breast cancer; however, if diagnosed at an early stage, it can be treated effectively.
She urged women to perform regular self-examinations, not to ignore any unusual changes around the breast or nipple, and to ensure periodic ultrasound or mammography checkups.
Prof Dr Andaleeb Aftab, herself a breast cancer survivor, shared her three-year journey of struggle and recovery. She said that early diagnosis, proper treatment, radiation therapy, regular medical checkups and the support and encouragement of doctors, paramedical staff, and family members helped her overcome the disease.
She remarked, “With the grace of Allah, patience, and determination, no challenge is impossible to overcome. Women must remain aware of their physical and mental health and undergo regular medical examinations.”
In the concluding session, students presented awareness sketches highlighting the importance of breast cancer prevention, self-examination, and public education.
The event concluded with an awareness walk, in which a large number of students, faculty members, and organizers participated enthusiastically. A special fundraising activity was also held on the occasion, where students actively contributed donations to support ongoing awareness initiatives.
