RAWALPINDI, Oct 15 (APP):The Rawalpindi Women University (RWU), in collaboration with the Save Our Society (SOS) Foundation, organised an event on Wednesday to mark the International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead,” aimed at promoting girls’ education, empowerment, and leadership.
SOS Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Shaista Sohail, in her keynote address, emphasised that the empowerment and education of women were vital for national development and fully supported by the teachings of the Holy Quran and Hadith.
RWU Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Inayat Allah and Begum Inayat Allah also graced the event.
Quoting the 2023 census data, Dr Shaista highlighted that the male literacy rate in Pakistan stood at 68 per cent compared to only 52 per cent for females, underscoring the urgent need to bridge the gender gap in education.
She appreciated Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s initiatives for women’s welfare, particularly the Pink Bus project, which provides safer and more accessible transport for working women and female students.
Dr Shaista further said that social transformation must begin at home, with mothers teaching their sons respect, empathy, and proper conduct towards women.
Reaffirming her foundation’s mission, she pledged continued efforts to promote girls’ literacy and help them play an active role in the country’s social and economic development.
The event concluded with the distribution of certificates among the participants.
