MULTAN, Oct 13 (APP): Rice growers have been urged to refrain from burning crop residue after harvest to help control smog and protect the environment.
Burning paddy residue damages the soil’s organic matter and reduces its fertility.
The Punjab Agriculture Department has advised farmers to follow its guidelines for safe disposal of residue through modern machinery.
Under the Chief Minister’s Smog Control Programme, the provincial government has provided 5,000 Super Seeders at 60% subsidy, costing Rs 5 billion, to promote eco-friendly residue management.
Farmers can improve soil fertility by mixing paddy stubble into the soil using rotavators or disc harrows, or by applying half a bag of urea per acre before irrigation.
The department reminded that burning crop residue was a punishable offense,
and strict action, including fines and arrests, was being taken against violators.
Farmers have been urged to cooperate with the government’s efforts to curb
smog and protect public
