ISLAMABAD, Oct 09 (APP):Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has continued its campaign against one-way violations, unlicensed driving, speeding, fancy number plates, and seat-belt offences actions that citizens have largely termed positive for traffic discipline but expressed strong concern over vehicle impounding and FIRs for minor violations.
An official told APP during the ongoing drive, more than 9,000 challans were issued, 2,500 vehicles impounded, and 24 FIRs registered on the first day under the directives of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi.
The campaign aims to ensure public safety and promote awareness in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Ordinance.
Surveyor Mudassir Ahmad told APP that while strictness is necessary to maintain order, impounding vehicles and lodging FIRs for small offences cause difficulties for the public.
“We support traffic discipline,” he said, “but such measures trouble office-goers and those rushing to hospitals.”
Rai Tasawar Ameer, a passenger from Sargodha, said that although the ITP campaign is a good step, lack of clear signboards on several routes confuses out-of-city commuters.
“If a vehicle is seized, returning home becomes almost impossible,” he added.
Government employee Tahir Azad noted that most violations are unintentional.
“A fine is acceptable,” he said, “but FIRs and impounding vehicles make things too severe for citizens.”
Ibrahim Hasan, a resident of Islamabad, welcomed the Islamabad High Court’s recent guidance to treat first-time licence violations with fines instead of FIRs.
“The decision restores citizens’ confidence that traffic enforcement will be balanced and lawful,” he remarked.
Officials said enforcement teams have been directed to act strictly within legal limits and focus on awareness and fines before stronger action in repeated or serious offences.
