PESHAWAR, Oct 09 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Swat, Saleem Jan Marwat here Thursday chaired a meeting to ensure the needed iodine content in salt and devise strategy to minimize effects due to iodine deficiency.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohibullah Khan Yousafzai, SP Swat Ghulam Sadiq, Deputy District Health Officer Swat, Nutrition International’s representative for the “Salt Iodization Program” Syed Hamid, representatives from the Population Department, Education Department, Assistant Director of Halal Food Authority Swat, President of the Salt Factories Association and other relevant officials.
During the meeting, the Nutrition International representative provided a detailed briefing and a comprehensive presentation on the quality and quantity of salt used in households, hotels, and general consumption in the Swat district.
He highlighted the adverse effects of iodine deficiency in the human body, its benefits and the necessity of including it in daily diets.
Addressing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Swat, Saleem Jan Marwat, emphasized that iodine is a vital element for human health and its deficiency can lead to various diseases.
He directed that a joint inspection of all salt factories in the Swat district be conducted involving officials from the district administration and the Halal Food Authority.
He further instructed that a thorough review of the iodine standards, registration documents and other legal requirements of salt factories be carried out. Immediate action should be taken against unregistered factories and those failing to meet the prescribed standards should be sealed.
He stressed that the use of iodized salt is essential for public health protection and urged relevant departments to fulfill their responsibilities with utmost seriousness and integrity in this connection.
