KARACHI, Oct 07 (APP):Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has launched a community outreach campaign for eradication of polio and the success of the vaccination campaign.
The commissioner met and addressed the community leaders of Clifton here on Tuesday.
Through the campaign, the commissioner will personally meet the community members who will create awareness among the parents about the polio and the importance and effectiveness of the vaccine and encourage them to vaccinate their children.
The aim of the outreach is to ensure that every child has access to vaccination with the cooperation of the parents.
In this regard, the Clifton Cantonment Board organized a special event at its office.
Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso, Polio Control Coordinator Saud Yaqoob, Additional CEO Clifton Cantonment Board Samina Shabbir also spoke on the occasion.
The commissioner said that the number of children who are not vaccinated due to refusals or missed cases, in Sindh, especially in Karachi, is the highest in the country.
He said that it is unfortunate that the areas in Karachi where children are not vaccinated due to missed or vaccine refusals include various posh areas of the city, including Defense and Clifton, where people are educated and belong to the wealthy class.
He said that there is a complaint that the residents of these areas do not cooperate with the polio teams and most of them do not open the door of their houses. This is making it difficult to vaccinate every child.
He said that apart from various other reasons, the main reason for the failure in the fight against polio is the difficulty in reaching all children and the lack of cooperation of parents.
The commissioner said that the Karachi administration, the Health Department and international organizations are working together to eradicate polio in Karachi so that polio can be eradicated from Pakistan.
He said that everyone needs to work together in this fight and the role of polio teams is important.
He said that the Sindh government is committed to eradicate polio from the country and the government is considering strict measures to succeed in this struggle.
These measures include the proposal to block mobile phone SIM cards, he said.
On this occasion, community representatives also expressed their views.
They assured the commissioner of their full cooperation and various strategies and procedures were agreed upon for successful vaccination.
