KHANEWAL, Oct 06 (APP):The Punjab government has assigned the task of ensuring the practical implementation of its policy banning plastic bags.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Salma Suleman has given the Environment Department a free hand to take strict action in this regard.
A meeting of the Plastic Management Committee was held under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ghulam Mustafa Sihar.
Deputy Director of Environment Protection, Sarfraz Anjum, briefed the meeting about actions taken in September against the sale and purchase of single-use plastic. Over 300 kilograms of banned plastic were seized, and 283 shopkeepers submitted written pledges to stop its use. Violators were fined Rs 30,000 during the campaign.
The meeting issued directives to ensure a complete ban on single-use plastics. ADC (G) Ghulam Mustafa said that the production, sale, and use of polythene bags are strictly prohibited. He added that the district administration was fully committed to environmental protection and public health.
He further directed officials to continue obtaining undertakings from manufacturers and shopkeepers and announced that a smart waste management process has been launched in both government and private schools to ensure waste segregation.
Officers from the Punjab Food Authority, Industries, Education Department, and representatives of the traders’ association attended the meeting.
