SIALKOT, Aug 28 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar Ali on Thursday visited various low-lying areas of the city, including Rangpura and Neikapura, to review drainage operations following record rainfall and urban flooding.
Speaking to the media, she said Sialkot had received 512mm of rain — a clear indication of severe climate change. She noted that the city’s three main drains — Nullah Aik, Nullah Bhed, and Nullah Palkhu — were flowing beyond capacity, causing spillovers and cracks at several points. “Water cannot be cleared from affected areas until the drains return to normal levels,” she added.
Calling the situation a natural disaster, the deputy commissioner urged citizens to pray for mercy. She confirmed that five people had lost their lives in the district due to flooding, while the risk of further casualties remained.
DC Saba Asghar said that the district administration, Rescue 1122, Pakistan Army, and police had jointly rescued around 6,900 people by Wednesday midnight. Relief camps had been set up where food, water, and shelter were being provided to displaced families.
Responding to a question, she explained that the suspension of the former MD WASA was due to his failure to manage human resources in time. The newly appointed MD, Faisal Shahzad, was present during her visit and has formally assumed charge.
