LAHORE, Jul 17 (APP):The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), under the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has released a comprehensive monsoon alert fact sheet on Thursday detailing the current status of monsoon rains, water levels in rivers, barrages, and dams across Punjab, along with the damages caused by the ongoing monsoon season.
In the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in Rawalpindi, Mandi Bahauddin, Chakwal, Jhelum, Okara, Mangla, Murree, Lahore, and Sheikhupura. This year’s monsoon rains have resulted in significant losses, with 113 fatalities, 128 houses damaged, and 398 citizens injured. Most deaths were attributed to the collapse of mud houses, dilapidated buildings, and roofs. Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia announced that financial assistance would be provided to the affected families as per government directives.
The fact sheet reports that water flow in most rivers and barrages in Punjab remains at normal levels. Mangla Dam is at 47% capacity, while Tarbela Dam holds 79% water. Indian dams are currently at approximately 34% capacity. A medium flood risk is anticipated at Rasool Barrage in the River Jhelum, while a low flood situation persists at Tarbela in the River Indus. The PDMA has completed arrangements to address potential flood threats.
There is a risk of urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala due to continued monsoon rains. The administration in major cities is on high alert to manage any emergency situations. The PDMA Control Room and District Emergency Operation Centers are monitoring the situation round-the-clock.
DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and local administrations to ensure proper drainage in low-lying areas to mitigate further risks. The Punjab government has imposed a strict ban on bathing in rivers, canals, and rain drains, with legal action promised for violations.
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, stay away from electric wires and poles, refrain from residing in dilapidated structures and contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 in case of emergencies.
