ABBOTTABAD, Jul 15 (APP):In a great medical achievement, a first-of-its-kind brain tumor surgery on Tuesday was successfully conducted at District Headquarters Hospital. The complex operation was performed by young gold medalist Dr. Shah Khalid, who made the seemingly impossible into possible through cutting-edge medical technology and advanced surgical expertise.
According to the details, the patient, a 33-year-old resident of Mansehra recently returned from Dubai, was diagnosed with a brain tumor after undergoing comprehensive diagnostic tests. While surgery was deemed necessary, the lack of required neuro-navigation equipment across the province made the procedure highly challenging.
Dr. Shah Khalid, trained at the prestigious Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi, had the neuro-navigation machine specially transported from Lahore. With the support of modern equipment and specialized anesthesia techniques, he successfully removed 95% of the tumor in a three-hour operation. The remaining 5% will be treated through radiation therapy.
“This surgery was a major challenge,” said Dr. Shah Khalid while speaking to the media. “Even a minor error could have resulted in permanent paralysis. Administering anesthesia solely to the brain while keeping the rest of the body conscious was a delicate task one I was trained for. Thankfully, we succeeded, and the patient is now recovering steadily.”
Dr. Shah Khalid also announced the formal launch of a dedicated neuro unit at DHQ Abbottabad, where treatment for all neurological conditions will now be available. “I have come from Aga Khan Hospital Karachi to serve the people of my region and will continue this mission of care and commitment,” he added.
He expressed gratitude to Medical Officer Dr. Amir Israr for his valuable assistance in operationalizing the neuro unit and supporting the successful outcome of the surgery.
