PESHAWAR, Jul 09 (APP):Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Wednesday said that journalists have played the role of frontline soldiers in the war against terrorism in the province and vowed to raise their concerns and represent them on every relevant forum.
He expressed these views while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Video Journalists Association at the Governor House Peshawar. The event was moderated by senior journalist Amjad Aziz Malik.
The ceremony was attended by President of Peshawar Press Club M. Riaz, President of the Association Sheikh Ashfaq Hussain, and the organization’s founder Rizwan Sheikh, who also spoke on the occasion.
Governor Kundi congratulated the new cabinet on their democratic election and appreciated the continuation of constructive dialogue between the media and the Governor’s office.
He said, “The Pakistan Peoples Party welcomes criticism aimed at reform. What we have started today should continue as a tradition at the Governor House.”
He acknowledged the recognized status of video and photo journalism globally, highlighting the indispensable role of media workers.
“The importance and role of media can never be diminished. There is an inseparable bond between media and politicians,” the governor said.
He emphasized that while criticism for improvement is necessary, the spread of fake news must be curbed, and media stakeholders must play their part in this effort. He called for healthy competition within the media landscape of Pakistan.
Paying tribute to the sacrifices made by journalists, Governor Kundi said, “I salute the courage and contributions of media workers who have stood firm during difficult times. Some even sacrificed their lives for the peace of this province.”
He assured journalists of Peshawar that he would take up their concerns with the Federal Minister for Information and act as their advocate.
In a humanitarian gesture, Governor Kundi announced that volunteers who have saved lives in Swat would be sent on Umrah. He also revealed that Red Crescent Swat will be provided with a special ambulance and five rescue boats, which will remain in contact with volunteer Hilal Khan.
Earlier, Governor Kundi administered the oath to the newly elected office-bearers of the association. During the event, Association President Sheikh Ashfaq Hussain presented a vote of thanks, while Press Club President M. Riaz underlined the growing importance of video and photo journalism in today’s media landscape.
