WCLA completes 70pc of conservation work at Anarkali Tomb

LAHORE, Jul 09 (APP):The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has made significant progress in the ongoing conservation of the historic Anarkali Tomb, one of the iconic monuments from the Mughal era.
Launched in July 2024 at an estimated cost of Rs. 124 million, the project is scheduled for completion by June 2026. To date, approximately 70 percent of the restoration work has been completed.
According to spokesperson, the conservation initiative is aimed at restoring the tomb while preserving its original architectural design and structure. Structural strengthening of the building has been fully achieved, while lime plaster application on the interior and exterior surfaces has reached 90 percent completion. Intricate stucco tracery work has been completed up to 80 percent, and the traditional ceiling embellishments, including Ghalib Kari and Muqarnas Kari, are 70 percent complete.
In the upcoming phase of the project, restoration teams will focus on flooring and the revival of fresco paintings. For the fresco work, WCLA is collaborating with heritage experts to ensure that original artwork discovered at the site is carefully studied and accurately restored using traditional techniques.
Talking about the project, Tania Qureshi, Director Media & Marketing at WCLA said that restoring the Anarkali Tomb is a way to bring our history back to life. “We are using traditional methods and skilled experts to ensure this monument is preserved for future generations. This will be a proud moment for Lahore’s heritage.”
The restoration of the Anarkali Tomb is part of WCLA’s broader mission to protect Lahore’s historical landmarks and promote cultural tourism. Upon completion, the site will serve as a significant cultural attraction for both local residents and international visitors, celebrating the city’s rich architectural legacy.
