GUJRAT, Jul 08 (APP):Commissioner Gujranwala Naveed Haider Shirazi and Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Irfan Ali Kathia visited Gujrat to review preparations for potential urban flooding during the monsoon season.
A high-level meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, where DC Gujrat Naveed Ahmed briefed the officials on measures taken to tackle urban and riverine flooding. He said that timely de-silting of drains and nullahs had been completed, machinery and emergency teams were on standby, and relief camps had been set up to deal with any eventuality. Officers from Rescue 1122, WASA, the Health Department, the Municipal Corporation, Civil Defence, and other relevant departments were also present.
PDMA DG Irfan Kathia warned that the approaching weather system could be intense, with risks of cloudbursts and urban flooding in the next 72 hours, particularly upstream of Head Marala. He directed officials to ensure timely evacuation of livestock, availability of vaccines, and adequate supply of fodder and essentials. Commissioner Shirazi ordered evacuation of residents from unsafe buildings and instructed assistant commissioners to ensure complete drain clearance.
GEPCO was directed to repair damaged electric poles, and all departments were asked to cancel leave and remain on high alert. Officials noted that Gujranwala Division is likely to receive 40 to 60 percent above-normal rainfall this monsoon and that all necessary arrangements have been finalized to protect lives and property.
