LAHORE, Jul 07 (APP):The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) conducted a large-scale inspection campaign across the province during Muharram-ul-Haram to ensure the provision of safe and hygienic food.
The inspection drive was launched under the supervision of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javed, in line with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Food safety teams remained actively engaged across all regions, inspecting 5,809 cooking centers, niyaz stalls, langar kitchens and sabeels. A fine of Rs7.562 million was imposed on 555 food units over violations of food safety standards while two cooking centers were sealed for using spoiled or substandard ingredients.
The PFA Director General said that teams discarded 196 liters of substandard beverages, 210 kilograms of unhygienic prepared food and several expired ingredients on the spot. A total of 1,177 food outlets were served improvement notices. He added that 3,755 food handlers were sensitized about hygiene practices and safe food handling. Free gloves and head covers were also distributed at langars and sabeels to promote hygienic conditions.
The DG said that PFA officers remained deployed during the sacred days of Muharram, with strict monitoring carried out at majalis, religious gatherings and roadside food stalls. He appreciated the cooperation of district administrations, elected representatives, and municipal bodies in making the campaign successful. He said that enforcement activities will continue without compromise. He has requested the public to report food safety violations by calling the PFA helpline 1223.
