MULTAN, Jul 02 (APP):Multan, one of the oldest cities in South Asia,is not just known for its Sufi heritage, vibrant bazaars and historic architecture but it has also earned the affectionate title of the “City of Gift-Givers.”
This title becomes especially relevant in summer when the local culture of sending mangoes as gifts reaches its peak.
In Multan, mango gifting is more than a seasonal activity. It is a cherished tradition that reflects the people’s generosity, affection and pride in their land’s produce. As the mango season ripens in July, residents of the city begin preparing to send the “king of fruits” to their relatives, friends and colleagues across the country.
Speaking to APP,Umar Daraz,a mango orchard owner from the Nawabpur village of Multan, highlighted the significance of this practice.“As soon as the mango harvest starts,I start receiving calls from regular citizens, not just wholesalers. They want to send mangoes as gifts to people in Karachi,Lahore,Islamabad and even remote towns,” he said. “This is not for profit but most of them buy in small quantities, often requesting careful packing to make sure their gift arrives fresh and fragrant.”
Mahmood Ahmed,a prominent businessman from the city, shared a personal glimpse into the gifting culture. “I send nearly 80 boxes of mangoes every year to friends, clients, and family members,” he noted. “Some boxes carry Sindhri, others have Chaunsa or Dussehri however I make sure everyone receives their favorite variety.”
For many, this act of gifting mangoes is not just about sharing fruit but it’s about spreading happiness. The arrival of a mango box from Multan is often taken as a gesture of respect, love, and goodwill. Whether it’s a businessman thanking his customers, a student sending mangoes to teachers, or families simply reconnecting through seasonal gifts so mangoes serve as a fragrant bridge of relationships, said Mehmood.
Mango courier services also witness a surge during this time. Local courier shops are seen packed with wooden crates and cardboard boxes full of ripe, golden fruit — each labeled carefully with names and destinations. “People even bring handwritten notes or cards to include with the mangoes. It’s a complete cultural package,” a courier service worker said.
Mr Aabid, another, stated the culture of sharing extends to all social classes. Even middle-income households in Multan often budget mango gifting into their summer expenses.“It’s part of who we are,”said Hamna Bibi,a school teacher.“Even if I send just two boxes , one to my uncle in Rawalpindi and one to my aunt in Bahawalpur and it makes me feel proud.”
This unique generosity has made Multan stand out as a city where giving gifts is woven into the fabric of everyday life. With every mango gifted, the city not only shares its fruit but its nice feelings from heart.
