Govt committed to cotton output boost through advanced research: Cotton Commissioner

MULTAN, Jun 10 (APP):Cotton Commissioner, Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Dr. Khadim Hussain said on Tuesday that the government was taking serious steps to enhance cotton production through promoting advanced research and providing better quality seed to farmers.
During a visit to Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) Multan, Dr Khadim Hussain, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC), said that the climate change, water shortage and pest pressure are a set of problems that has necessitated more attention to research and development activities.
The cotton commissioner visited agronomy, plant breeding and genetics, cytogenetics, plant physiology and chemistry, entomology and farm management sections of CCRI Multan where he also witnessed field trials and modern research activities.
Research and development was more important now than ever, said the agriculture scientist, and underlined the need for developing hybrid seed varieties that can survive the local conditions and give high per acre yield.
He also emphasized adaptability to High Density Plantation (HDPS) technology to get higher yield from shorter areas. He promised to accelerate cotton research activities and stressed that results from field research must reach farmers in a swift and effective manner.
Secretary PCCC and director CCRI Multan Dr. Muhammad Idrees Khan gave a detailed briefing to the cotton commissioner on research activities at CCRI Multan.
