Tariq Fatemi seeks Norway's support for Pakistan's NGS membership

ISLAMABAD, Sep 6 (APP): Special Assistant to PM on
Foreign Affairs (SAPM), Syed Tariq Fatemi, currently on an
official visit to Oslo (Norway), as Special Envoy of the Prime
Minister, held a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of
Norway, Mr Tore Hattrem on Tuesday.

The SAPM highlighted that Pakistan and Norway enjoy
close and cordial relations that are based on friendship,
trust and understanding.

The cooperative ties have received a powerful boost as
a result of the Prime Minister’s successful visit to Oslo, said
a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here.

Besides bilateral issues, the SAPM sought Norway’s
support for Pakistan’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers
Group (NSG). Presenting Pakistan’s point of view, the SAPM emphasized the need for equal treatment of all applicants, based on objective and non-discriminatory criteria for membership.

He reiterated that Pakistan’s application stood on solid
grounds of technical expertise, capability and well-established
commitments to nuclear safety and security.

The Special Assistant assured his interlocutors that
Pakistan’s export controls regime was fully harmonized with
those of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Missile Technology Control Regime (MTRC) and Australia Group.

He emphasized that Pakistan was a strong advocate of
meaningful non-proliferation initiatives that were fair, equal
and non-discriminatory.

The two sides agreed to identify new areas of common
interest to further strengthen the relationship in diverse
sectors.
