ISLAMABAD, Mar 18 (APP):Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed and Minister of State fro Climate Change Zartaj Gul on Monday formally inaugurated Clean and Green Pakistan campaign by planting saplings here near the Islamabad Airport.    

Speaking on the occasion, he said National highway Authority has been entrusted with the responsibility to ensure cleanliness and greenery around its road infrastructure projects.

He said cleanliness and plantation was being done at 15 more places in all parts of the country He said as per vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the incumbent government for the first time involved all segments of the society including students, civil society and corporate sector in achieving this goal of clean and green Pakistan.

He said National Highway Authority would take up 100 km section of the road and convert it into model highway and later this would be expanded to entire Pakistan.

He disclosed that Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway, to be opened for traffic later this month, would have a state of the art project and an Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

He said latest digital system is employed at the project which includes handling emergencies, controlling traffic accidents, lane marking, placement of LED screens, electronic toll collection, weigh station system and installation of optic fiber cable as well as maximum civic and travelling facilities shall be ensured at service areas.

High speed vehicles will be monitored through cameras and this digital system shall also be installed along other motorways gradually.

He said in coming few years NHA would be made self sufficient by introducing business plan, commercial use of right of way and GIS mapping of the national road network.

He said during past few months, the NHA has saved Rs 9.5 billion and the plan is to save Rs 100 billion per annum so that the save amount could be used for health, education and other social sectors.

In her speech Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul said clean and green Pakistan was a movement launched on war footings as the country needed emergency steps to protect us from the affects of climate change due to deforestation.

She appreciated Ministry of Communications for its initiatives for improvement of national highways network.

She also appreciated the Parks and Horticulture Authority Rawalpindi for its efforts in connection with plantation in the area. She said plantation and landscaping of Metro Project would be a very good steps which would highlight national history and culture through murals.

Earlier, two memorandums of understanding were signed between NHA and PHA for plantation and landscaping New Metro Bus project and Airport Road Network.
