PM visits Ulugh Beg Observatory to see astronomer’s facility

SAMARKAND, Nov 18 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Wednesday visited the Ulugh Beg Observatory here established by 15th century astronomer Ulugh Beg to make observations of astronomical,meteorological or other natural phenomena.
Built in year 1420 by Ulugh Beg, the facility was considered as one of finest observatories in the Islamic world.The observatory was re-discovered by Uzbek-Russian archaeologist
in 1908 after it was destroyed in 1449.Prime Minister was accompanied by Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev, also minister-in-waiting and his delegation comprising
his Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, Advisor on National Security Lt. Gen (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua and Pakistan’s Ambassador in Tashkent Riaz Bukhari
The Prime Minister reached here on second leg of two-day visit of Uzbekistan on Tuesday, while being in Tashkent, he met President Islam Karimov, Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev and discussed bilateral and regional matters of mutual interests.
These observatories were also used to predict eclipses and calculate the hour of the rising sun. The Prime Minister also visited the Observatory museum displaying the parts of the observatory, Ulug Beg’s star charts and other items used in that period.
