No contracts are awarded to relatives of PWD officers

Sheikh Aftab assures due consideration to KP, Balochistan nominations for civil awards

ISLAMABAD Nov 25 (APP): The Senate was informed Friday that no contract is awarded to any relative of Public Works Department officials and an undertaking is taken from every contractor before awarding the contract.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Aftab Sheikh told the House during Question Hour that laid down procedure was strictly followed in awarding contracts and a written undertaking was mandatory to ensure transparency.

If the members think any amendments were needed to improve the working that would be welcomed, he added.

Answering a supplementary question regarding any inquiry or action on sub-standard work, he said, a scientific mechanism is in place to check quality of work. Moreover, he said big firms have to take a certificate from Pakistan Engineering Council before registration with PWD.

He said relative equipment and reputation of the firm was also checked prior to awarding a contract. “Every effort is made to ensure that quality of work is up to the mark.”

During the course of discussion, Presiding Officer Ahmed Hassan remarked that in most of cases the quality of construction is complained to be sub-standard.

He said the government officers and employees often complain that official accommodations deteriorate rapidly and even fail to complete their specified life.

He directed the minister to ensure that quality is maintained and the public money judiciously spent while awarding contracts or during construction.
