Pakistan’s mediating role reflects enduring Bandung spirit: Experts

ISLAMABAD, May 02 (APP):The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with the International Institute for Regional and International Studies (IIRIS), organized a high-level discussion on “Pakistan’s Current Mediating Role as a Genuine Reflection of the Bandung Spirit” at the Indonesian Corner, National Library of Pakistan.
The hybrid event brought together diplomats, scholars, strategic experts, and students from leading universities, including Quaid-i-Azam University, NUST, Bahria University, and NUML, to deliberate on Pakistan’s growing role in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution in a rapidly evolving global landscape,said a release issued here.
In his welcome address, IIRIS President Shafqat Rasool highlighted the continued relevance of the Bandung Spirit as a framework for inclusive diplomacy, mutual respect, and South-South cooperation.

Former Defence Secretary General (R) Naeem Khalid Lodhi emphasized the importance of strategic balance and pragmatic diplomacy in addressing contemporary conflicts. Abdullah Gul, Director General of MEASAC Research Center, presented an in-depth analysis of current geopolitical trends, while Dr. Sarwat Rauf of NUML noted that the Bandung principles remain a living guide for Pakistan’s credible mediation efforts.
Professor Tahir Malik further contextualized these perspectives within modern international relations.
Representatives from the Indonesian Embassy linked Pakistan’s mediating efforts to the legacy of the Bandung Conference, underscoring the principles of peaceful dispute resolution, sovereignty, and non-alignment.
First Secretary (Political Affairs) Donny Ardiwidha stated that peaceful resolution of disputes remains a core essence of the Bandung Spirit. Minister Counsellor Rahmat Hindiarta noted that Pakistan and Indonesia were among the key contributors to the 1955 conference, which continues to shape their foreign policy outlook rooted in peace and cooperation.
He also conveyed appreciation from Indonesian Ambassador Chandra W. Sukotjo to the speakers and participants, highlighting the Indonesian Corner as a hub for people-to-people engagement.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Munawar Hussain, Chairman of the IIRIS Board, who reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to promoting intellectual dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
The discussion, held in April,the birth month of the Bandung Spirit served as a reminder of its enduring relevance as a guiding principle for fostering peace, cooperation, and shared global responsibility.
