GB elections prove PPP enjoys support of masses:Kaira PDF Print E-mail

ISLAMABAD, Nov 18 (APP): Acting Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira said Wednesday that the Gilgit-Baltistan elections have again proved that the Pakistan Peoples Party was one of the major political forces of the country and enjoys support of the majority of the masses. This he said while speaking to PPP members-elect of Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly here at a dinner he had hosted in their honour.Kaira, who is also Minister for Information and Broadcasting, said that whenever free and fair elections would be held in any part of the country, the PPP would  return victorious. He said that despite anti-PPP campaign by certain elements during past one- and- a- half- year the results have proved that the people of Pakistan support the PPP policies.

He further said that victory in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections was an achievement, but coming up to the expectations of the people of the area was the bigger challenge ahead.

Kaira said elections in Gilgit-Baltistan were free, fair and transparent and Pakistan Peoples Party emerged victorious on the basis of its service to the people of the area.

The PPP has history of serving the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and has made efforts for providing political rights to the people of the area, he said.

Rejecting the allegations of rigging he said “The PPP lost two seats including that of its Secretary General with a narrow margin which was a manifestation that elections were held in free and fair manner,” he remarked.

Kaira said that representatives of national media and over 300 election observers were present in Gilgit-Baltistan and none of them had found any evidence of rigging.

He also mentioned that the PPP has always enjoyed support of the people of this area and remained the single largest party in all elections in the past.”Even in 2004 elections which were held under the Musharraf era,the PPP secured eight seats and became the single largest party in the then Northern Areas Legislative Assembly”.

It was the government of Shaheed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto which brought far-reaching reforms in Gilgit which remained an agency till 1972.  He said that during Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s second term as Prime Minister, Northern Areas Legal Framework Order was introduced, the Minister informed the National Assembly.

He said again it was the credit of the PPP to introduce Gilgit-Baltistan self-governance reform package 2009, another step towards political and socio-economic development of the area.

The Governor Gilgit-Baltistan said that it was a very good omen that top leadership of all political parties participated in election campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan elections as it created a sense in the people of the area that they belonged to Pakistan.
