PPP’s majority in GB election described “victory of democracy”
ISLAMABAD, Nov 16 (APP): Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s victory in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) legislative assembly election has been largely acknowledged as personalities from different walks of life Monday described it a “victory of democracy” which would bring a new era of development in the region.
As per unofficial results, the PPP
has won 12 of 23 contested seats and became the largest party in the
33-seat GB Legislative Assembly where process of forming government is
expected to be completed soon. Congratulating the new assembly
members, Speaker, National Assembly, Dr. Fehmida Mirza and Deputy
Speaker National Assembly, Faisal Karim Kundi said the win of PPP was
an evidence of trust and confidence of GB people, they reposed in the
party. Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for
Information and Broadcasting, who is also Acting Governor in GB, said
PPP is a popular and traditional party in Northern Areas since 1972
because its founding leader Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had played
dynamic role for the progress and prosperity of the people of this
region. He said the polls were held in
free, fair and transparent manner and added PPP emerged victorious on
the basis of its performance and services to the people of the area. He said Shaheed Zulfikar Ali
Bhutto was the first Pakistani leader who not only abolished black laws
and feudal system but also gave electoral rights to the people of GB
for the first time. Minister for State and Frontier
Regions, Najamuddin Khan said PPP has always served the masses and made
efforts for providing political rights to the people of the area. He said the elections have
fulfilled long-standing demand of the people of GB and expressed
confidence the new elected representatives would prove a milestone in
the empowerment of the people. State Minister for Information,
Syed Sumsam Ali Shah Bukhari said Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto took
pragmatic steps for the development and prosperity of the area and
introduced political, judicial and economic development package for the
area during her tenure. He asked the opposition parties to accept the election results and work for the welfare of the people. Punjab Finance Minister, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira said free and fair elections in GB was a historic step of the PPP government. Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister,

Khan and Makhdoom Jameel Zaman said the formation of a new legislative
assembly for the first time in Gilgit and Baltistan would be a new
history. Shazia Marri said the PPP had once
again proved that it was the biggest political party of the country and
the credit of a new political development in the region went to the
party for ensuring autonomy to the people of this region. Sharmila Farooqui said the PPP government would soon resolve the grievances of the deprived people of the region. Social Welfare Minister, Begum
Nargis and Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination, Makhdoom Jameel
Zaman hoped the new government in this region would soon start focusing
on the political and economic issues and resolve them on priority basis. Incharge of PPP’s election
campaign in GB, Ch. Manzoor Ahmed said democracy and democratic values
have won in the elections and people of the area have acknowledged the
efforts and sacrifices of PPP. He congratulated the newly elected members and expressed the hope they would come up to the expectations of people. Former Women Member of Legislative
Assembly, Dr.Perveen Ashraf said the victory of PPP in GB elections is
evident that it is a symbol of federation.
