Uproar in Maharashtra assembly on slapping a member for taking oath in Hindi
NEW DELHI, Nov. 9 (APP) Raj Thackeray men on Monday slapped a member of the Maharashtra assembly Abu Azmi belonging to Samajwadi party for taking oath in Hindi. As the new members of the Maharashtra Assembly were taking oath, Raj Thackeray’s men slapped him and also grabbed the microphone which created uproar in the assembly. During the recently held assembly elections, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) managed to win 13 seats.
Thackeray has been publicly
demanding that the oath for all members be administered only in
Marathi. But Azmi resisted it by saying he was entitled to take the
oath in the national language Hindi.
“I asked to take the oath in Hindi since I don’t know Marathi. I
respect Marathi as much as my own mother,” Azmi said after the incident.
The MNS has also been asking north Indians to leave the state.
Meanwhile, leaders of several political parties from Hindi speaking
states and the CPI have demanded the government to take action against
Raj Thackeray for trying to divide the country on grounds of language.
They termed the incident in the Maharashtra Assembly “anti national and
unconstitutional” and said the country could disintegrate if divisive
forces were not checked.
Samajwadi party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader
Lalu Prasad have condemned the incident saying if efforts were not
taken urgently to check divisive forces, the country could disintegrate.
