UNHCR assistance for South Waziristan IDPs continues
ISLAMABAD, Nov 3 (APP): The UN refugee agency said on Tuesday that it was continuing assistance for the displaced population fleeing the ongoing operation in South Waziristan Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). As civilians take refugees with relatives and host communities in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank in north western Pakistan, says a press release here.
UNHCR said it was supporting the registration process, distribution of non-food items, and provision of free transport for people coming out of the affected zone to safer locations.
The agency was also exploring the possibility to provide necessary services, like water, immediate health care at pre-registration points, en-route to D.I Khan and Tank.
“We are supporting the registration process of the internally displaced people in Dera Ismail Khan and Tank through the provincial Social Welfare Department at six registration points, providing technical and financial support,” said Kilian Kleinschmidt, UNHCR Assistant Representative in Islamabad.
“Registration is an important first step to establish the fact that registered people are in need of humanitarian assistance and care.
We have distributed more than 17,500 family relief kits to the deserving registered population through our partners,” Mr. Kleinschmidt further added.
UNHCR, relief items include kitchen sets, blankets, mats, jerry cans, sleeping mats, plastic sheets, mosquito nets, bed sheets, quilts, buckets and soap to the registered displaced population.
The refugee agency said it was not only responding to the needs of people returning to Malakand but was continuing to provide relief to those remaining displaced from Malakand and Bajaur - more than 85,000 of whom are residing in camps.
