KARACHI, Aug 13 (APP): The program for poverty reduction at
the Union Council level was reviewed at an important meeting held under the
chairmanship of Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah. The Chief Minister said that under the plan, financial
assistance and loan facilities will be provided along with basic facilities
while employment opportunities will be created for people living in backward
areas.

Under the pilot project, he directed, the target fixed for
two districts be achieved while four more districts of Jacobabad, Thatta, Badin
and Khairpur be included in the project.
In a briefing on the occasion, Abdul Aziz Uqaili informed
that overall 257,000 people have been benefitted in 50 UCs of district Shikarpur
and 37 UCs of district Kashmore and Kandhkot.
In these 87 UCs 4200 Village Organizations have been formed
through which 84,000 poor families, rehabilitated through social mobilization.
The meeting was told that so far Rs 7.19 billion have been
distributed among 1004 families at Rs 7161 per family.
It was further informed that Rs 65.3 million were
distributed among 5036 families at Rs 12,996 per family.
It was stated that various types of programs have been
started for village organizations, particuarly women and so far 35 percent
target achieved.
Under this project 21,000 persons would be imparted
training with a target of 4478 during February-July out of which 1984 people
given vocational training in CC block, open and close drains, brick and RCC
construction on sides, latrine, development of villages with water tank and hand
pump and reactivation of non-functional schemes etc.
The meeting was informed that in connection with creating
employment opportunities, Rs.177,800 were arranged as daily earning of 442
skilled workers and Rs 1,428,200 as daily wages of 7091 unskilled workers.
The Chief Minister appreciated the work and said it would
be further improved to reduce poverty at UC level.
