Pakistan-Sri Lanka to promote defence coop |

ISLAMABAD, Jan 19 (APP): Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Monday underscored the need
for maintaining and promoting closer cooperation particularly in the area of
defence. This
was discussed at a meeting between Secretary Defence, Lt. General ® Syed
Athar Ali, and the visiting Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse, who called on him in Ministry of Defence Rawalpindi.

The
meeting emphasized the need for developing military to military cooperation at all levels. Secretary Defence told his Sri Lankan counterpart
that there
existed a wide scope of cooperation between two sides which needed to be further enhanced for the mutual benefits of the two countries.
He
said Pakistan would continue to provide support to Sri Lanka in all fields. The meeting agreed to enhance cooperation in the area of military training, exercises and intelligence sharing so as to contain and counter the growing threat of terrorism.
Sri
Lankan Defence Secretary stressed the need for closer interaction between the Armed Forces of the two countries.
He
thanked the government of Pakistan for its continued support to Sri Lankan Armed Forces.
The
visiting dignitary also called on Secretary Defence Production, Lt. General ® Shahid Tirmizey and discussed with him matters of mutual interest.
The
Secretary briefed him about the potential of defence industry of Pakistan.
