55% of India’s population poor -
NEW DELHI, Sep 9 (APP)- India’s abysmal track record at ensuring basic levels of nutrition is the greatest contributor to its poverty as measured by the new international Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI).About 645 million people or 55% of India’s population is poor as measured by this composite indicator made up of ten markers of education, health and standard of living achievement levels.Developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) for the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) forthcoming 2010 Human Development Report, the MPI attempts to capture more than just income poverty at the household level.


Literacy has empowering effect on women, UN officials say -
UNITED NATIONS, Sep 9 (APP)- Top United Nations officials have called for more funding and advocacy to improve literacy rates among the worlds women, who comprise two out of every three adults who cannot read or write.In a message marking International Literacy Day, which is observed today, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the transformative effect on both a family and the wider community when a woman is literate.Literate women are more likely to send their children, especially their girls, to school, he said. By acquiring literacy, women become more economically self-reliant and more actively engaged in their countrys social, political and cultural life. All evidence shows that investment in literacy for women yields high development dividends.


Hafiz Sheikh calls for greater access to EU -
PARIS , Sep 9 (APP)- Federal Minister for Finance Abdul Hafiz Sheikh who is on two days visit to France raised the issue of greater access to the European markets for Pakistani products, during a meeting with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.He discussed the possibilities of enhancing economic cooperation between two countries. Mr. Kouchner agreed that there was ample space for enhancement of bilateral cooperation in economic as well as other fields.Hafiz Sheikh briefed Mr. Kouchner on economic reforms being carried out by the Government of Pakistan and their impact on the economy of the country.


UN General Assembly adopts resolution condemning terrorism -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 9 (APP)- Reiterating its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, the General Assembly Wednesday reaffirmed its support for the UN anti-terror strategy and called for  implementing the four-year-old initiative. With the unanimous adoption of a new resolution, the 192-member Assembly capped its second biennial review of the UN Global Strategys implementation by reaffirming support for the initiatives four pillars.


US gratified with Pakistan’s arrests over failed NY bomb attempt -
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (APP)- The United States is gratified that Pakistan has made some arrests in connection with May 1 failed car bombing attempt in New York City’s Times Square, the State Department said.“There is an ongoing criminal investigation, but we are gratified that Pakistan have made some arrests in this case. But obviously, the fate of those particular defendants is in the hands of the Pakistani judicial system,” a spokesman said, when asked to comment on reported arrest of three suspects by Pakistani authorities.

IHRC nominates Rahman Malik for Int’l peace award 2008 PDF Print E-mail

ISLAMABAD, Sep 24 (APP): The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Wednesday nominated Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior A. Rehman Malik for the “International Peace Award 2008 for War against Terrorism.”

Rehman Malik is the first male form Pakistan and 3rd member of Pakistan People’s Party to receive the honour as the award had also been conferred upon Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in the year 1996 for her outstanding contributions for democracy and human rights.

The award is recognition of the services rendered by Rehman Malik in the area of fighting war against terrorism and extremism for achieving the lasting peace in the country, strengthening the democratic institution after the establishment of newly elected government under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari.

In his career, Rehman Malik served as the bold and brave officer and as the member of Pakistan People’s Party, he played very vital role for the return of democracy in the country, said Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Shahid Amin Khan, World Chairman of IHRC here after official meeting with Rehman Malik.

Lauding, Rehman Malik for his bold steps as the Interior Minister, Dr. Khan said, “he is fighting for the country and its peoples and he is committed to establish peace and rule of law and he is fulfilling the promise of Shaheed Bhutto with homeland.”

Rehman Malik would receive this award in a ceremony to be organized by the IHRC in New York on December 10, 2008.

Queen Ranja Al-Abdullah of Jordan also nominated and receive this award.
