RAWALPINDI, Feb 25 (APP): Surgeon General of Army Medical Corps Lieutenant General Mushtaq Ahmed Baig and seven others were killed in a suicide blast here Monday, officials said.General Mushtaq’s driver and guard were among the eight martyred in the blast, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations, Major General Athar Abbas told PTV.
More than a dozen people were wounded in the explosion, police and interior ministry officials said. The bomber hit General Mushtaq’s car at a traffic light on the busy Mall Road at the GPO chowk, they said. Security officials immediately cordoned off the site of the blast and shifted the injured to Rawalpindi General Hospital and the nearby Military Hospital. Witnesses said several vehicles were also damaged in the blast. Sources at the Rescue 1122 emergency service said they shifted two complete bodies, parts of a body and a head to the Military Hospital. The head shifted to the Miltiary Hospital could be of the suspected suicide attacker, the sources said. A graduate of King Edwards Medical College, Lahore, Lt. Gen. Mushtaq Ahmad Baig joined Army Medical Corp in January 1976. He was promoted as Lieutenant General and appointed Surgeon General Pakistan Army and Director General Medical Services (Inter Services) on Feb 8, 2007. He was an Ophthalmologist. He has many publications to his credit and attended many national and international workshops on Ophthalmology. Presently he was serving as Principal Army Medical College, Rawalpindi. He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), in recognition of his meritorious services. A graduate of King Edwards Medical College, Lahore, Lt. Gen.
