UN chief welcomes lifting of siege of Iraqi town; aid rushed -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 2 (APP): With the siege on the northern Iraqi town of Amerli finally broken, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday expressed his appreciation to the Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, and others, who, with air support from the United States, helped avert a humanitarian disaster in the town.

WASHINGTON Sept 1 APP- The United States on Monday called for restraint by all sides in Pakistan's political crisis, saying protesters had a right to demonstrate peacefully but that it strongly opposed efforts to impose change through violence and destruction of property.


1,420 people killed in Iraqi violence in August: UN -
UNITED NATIONS, Sept 1 (APP): At least 1,420 Iraqis have been killed and  1,370 injured in terrorist attacks and sectarian violence during August, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said in a statement on Monday.

expoooooooooooooo3333333333333.jpgKARACHI, Oct. 19 (APP)- Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday that by 2014, Pakistan is expecting to qualify and benefit from the European Union’s import preferential treatment under the GSP Plus regime allowing duty free access for all export products.He was speaking at the inauguration of 6th Expo Pakistan 2011 at Governor House. Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minster for Overseas Pakistanis Dr Farooq Sattar, Port and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghori President FPCCI were also present on the occasion.
He said that the government has made concerted efforts to acquire better market access for Pakistani products to the world markets. “In this regard, the President and I have been emphasizing Pakistan needs “Trade Not Aid”.
He pointed out that the European Unions’s offer at the WTO to Pakistan for duty free access to goods from 75 tariff lines is just one example of such endeavours of the present government.
Referring to efforts for market access, he said Pakistan has already entered into preferential and free trade agreements with China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Mauritius. I would strongly urge our exporters to take full advantage of the market access opportunities of the bilateral agreements”, he opined.  
Talking of negotiations with India, he said the government was also making concerted efforts to enhance regional trade with our neighbours. Recently held trade talks between India and Pakistan are going in a positive direction, he noted.Prime Minister pointed out that the Ministry of Commerce has announced a three year Strategic Trade Policy Framework to provide a long-term policy framework of sustainable businesses. This would enable them to plan expansion and growth, he observed.
He asked the government agencies  to simplify procedures, reduce red tapism, and enhance transparency and efficiency to create a business-friendly environment in the country.
“I am happy to note that meaningful headway has been made in this regard by the people’s government”,he added.
Quoting a recent World Bank Report “Ease of Doing Business in South Asia”, which has put Pakistan as one of the attractive investment destinations in the region, he said this is an acknolwdgment of our policies.
He said the government realizes the hardships of the business communities who are facing severe problems in the face of energy outages and still they have outperformed. It is the ingenuity and hard work of the Pakistani entrepreneurs that made the difference.
He said the democratic government is fully cognizant of these difficulties and is taking appropriate steps to overcome all such problems to facilitate the undertaking of businesses in the country.  
He said that though Pakistan is facing the menace of terrorism at home and in our neighborhood, it is still an attractive country for doing business.
He also thanked the business community for their assistance and support to the government’s efforts for rehabilitation of flood affected people.
He advised the exhibitors at this EXPO to play the role of trade ambassadors. They should not only showcase and market quality products and services but also practice the best business ethics. The focus should be to build long-term business relations with our customers abroad with a view to establish “MADE IN PAKISTAN” as a reliable brand.  
He also commended the organizers of this 6th EXPO PAKISTAN for all their efforts in putting up this impressive event.
