ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP): The government of Finland Wednesday donated 1.2 million euros for relief of the people devastated by flash floods hitting various parts of the country. “Following the decision of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo V’yrynen, Finland has granted a total of 1.2 million euros in humanitarian assistance for flood victims in Pakistan,” said the spokesman in a press release.
According to the spokesman, a severe humanitarian crisis has arisen in
Pakistan as a result of the heavy monsoon rains the country has
experienced in the past few weeks.
According to the release, some 500,000 people have been left homeless
and 252,000 buildings have been destroyed by the floods. Flood damage
has occurred across Pakistan and widespread collapse of road network
and bridges has made it difficult for aid to reach its destination.
The floods already affected the lives of four million people, and the rains are expected to continue.
Finland’s assistance will be distributed and used for shelter,
healthcare, water supply and sanitation. It also encompasses aftercare
of the floods.
Out of total support, 600,000 euros are being channeled through the
World Health Organization, 400,000 euros through the UN Refugee Agency
and 200,000 euros through Finn Church Aid.
According to the estimates of relief organizations, the need for aid will come to at least 100 million US dollars.
